The people of Mayel Lyang regard Kanchenjunga as their guardian deity.
They believe their earliest ancestors were created from the snows on the summit of the peak, which towers over their homeland.
The Lepcha have been praying to Kanchenjunga for hundreds of years. Lepcha folklore fortells that the mountain has a hidden path to paradise and treasures are hidden but it will only reveal to the devout when the world is in peril.
Growing up, alone as i was, I always found myself looking upto the mountain and talking with him. He always gave me wise answers and i would often end up talking to the mountain for hours.
I remember this one time fighting with my mother and running off into the forest. Climbing that tree(which i am so find of) and looking upto the mountain for answers. I spend a long time on top of that tree, till the sun set over the peak. Really had a hard time finding my way back home.
Even as i grow old, i still hold you with the same reverence i did when i was a kid. Being greeted by you every morning is one of the many reasons why I am so glad to be alive. Everytime I look at you, i feel a sense of bliss and calm. You really are a guardian deity for those who believe in you. I am glad i could have all these conversations with you, O great mountain.
