"Beside me is a Fisherman and his two Cormorants in the Li River in Yangshuo. Cormorant fishing is a traditional way of catching fish with these trained and beloved birds of theirs who they treat as pets. Probably one of the most awakening travel experiences I have had in a while, after learning about them. I found out earlier that cormorant fishing is dying because the yeild of fish is too low and they rely on these photography tours for a living. They are the last of Guilin’s authentic fishermen. After a couple of years, they won’t be in the Li River anymore. A reality that is sadly hard to control.
What a humbling experience as he escorted me from the rocks to his raft and held my hand so I would not slip in the cold and rocky river. He taught me how to light a lamp and then began posing like the pro he is 🤗
As soon as we handed him our payment for this photography tour, he gently shook our hand and gave us the biggest smile. It was such an honor to be able to experience these moments with this man who was willing to share with us a part of their tradition. It may be a staged photo, but such a beautiful experience and a memory I will carry on with me for years to come. ✨"
